TTT – Best Character Names

Hello humans! Today it is once more Top Ten Tuesday (funny how that comes around every week isn’t it?). The theme for this week is character names, now there are some amazing character names out there (and then there are some with extraneous Xs and Ys in typical fantasy fashion) but I have selected ten of my favourites to share with you.

Xiomara  – The Poet X

My Review

One of the best examples of names with strong meanings in books. Xiomara as a name can be traced back to the meaning ‘warrior’ which is so apt for this character.

Speth Jimes – All Right’s Reserved

In this case, this isn’t a pretty name, but that is the whole point. In a world where all names have a cost Speth’s name was a cheap one. It’s a wonderful way of worldbuilding with your protagonist’s name.

AIDAN – The Illuminae Files

My Review

Five letters that conjure twisted delight in any Illuminae files fans. I love acronym names for AI and AIDAN is one of the most evocative. For those wondering, AIDAN stands for “Artificial Intelligence Defense Analytics Network”.

Seraphina – Seraphina

My Review

Any book with a titular character had better have a good name. I think Seraphina is the perfect choice for this character. Seraphina actually comes from Hebrew and means ‘fiery winged’ which is appropriate not only because of the dragons in this book but also the religious imagery, since so much of the worldbuilding in this book is tied around religion and religious prejudice.

Eragon – Eragon

This one is honestly just on here because it makes me laugh. It’s a book about dragons. The main characters name is ‘dragon’ but with an E.

Lira – To Kill a Kingdom

My Review

I don’t have anything particularly clever or witty to say about this one, I just thought that the name fits the character incredibly well.

Dangerous Beans – The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents

All the rat’s names in this book amused me, but Dangerous Beans is most certainly my favourite.

Offred – The Handmaid’s Tale

My Review

Offred is, of course, the main character, but the naming in this book is what I actually want to talk about. Each Handmaid is named ‘Of + her master’s name’ so names of characters change throughout this book. Again it’s the perfect use of names to help with worldbuilding.

Asha – The Last Namsara

My Review

Purely on here because I have a wondrous human friend of the same name.

Sorrow – State of Sorrow

My Review

Another titular character! In this case, this name actually doesn’t sum up the character as Sorrow is far more nuanced than just one character. You’ll just have to read the book to find out why this name is so perfect…
